1 Cor 11 for HISTORICAL and CULTURAL Context:

“When you gather together, therefore, you do not eat and drink as is appropriate on the day of Adoneinu. But some men eat their supper before others; and so it happens that one is hungry and another is drunk. Why? Have you not houses to eat and drink in? Or do you not respect the congregation of Elohim, and want to shame those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you? No, for this, I cannot praise you. For I myself received from Adoneinu that which I also delivered to you, that Adoneinu Yeshua on that very night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My Body, which is broken for you; this do in remembrance of Me.” Likewise after supper, He gave also the cup and said, “This cup is the Renewed Covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you commemorate Adoneinu’s death until His coming. Therefore whosoever shall eat of the bread of יהוה and drink of His cup unworthily shall be guilty of the blood and body of יהוה. For this reason, let a man examine himself and eat of this bread and drink of this cup. For he who eats and drinks unworthily eats and drinks to his condemnation; for he does not discern the Body of יהוה. This is the reason many are sick and weak among you, and many are dying.”

These verses are rife with information. One piece of these verses is used by some to support the idea that those who trust Messiah should congregate on the 1st day of the week, reasoning that He rose from the dead on that day, so that is “The Day of the L-rd”.

First, He rose from the dead very late on SATRDAY NIGHT. And theologians know this. They just do not tell the average reader. Each of the verses in the gospels actually state that it was the “first of the week”, and NOT the first DAY of the week. In a good xlation, ‘day’ is italicized to show the reader it is NOT in the original text. [Matt 28:1, Mark 16:2,9, Luke 24:1, John 20:1,19]. The Jewish week has ALWAYS started on SATURDAY NIGHT. Most of these verses also say, ‘toward the end of the Sabbath at the beginning of the week’. This is called “Motzei Shabbat” in Hebrew. ‘The leaving of the Sabbath’. This means during a ceremony called HAVDALLAH. At Motzei Shabbat [the leaving of the Sabbath], just BEFORE the sun goes down, a candle is lit [traditionally one that has more than one wick]. Doing so before the sun goes down means the light still belongs to the Sabbath, it is symbolic of the light of the Sabbath. AFTER the sun goes down, the special light is extinguished in wine. We pray from Isaiah 12, “Behold, G-D is my salvation [Yeshua]; I will trust, and will not be afraid; for GOD, יהוה, is my strength and song; and He is become my YESHUA [salvation]. Therefore with joy shall you draw water out of the wells of Yeshua [salvation].” When we pray this prayer, we are commemorating the very moment Yeshua ROSE FROM THE DEAD! And we bring that power with us into the ordinary week when we start our ‘mundane’ worldly lives again, having to go back out and face temptation and trials. Nothing could be more appropriate to remember His RESURRECTION at such a time!  Every week!

Yeshua AROSE from the dead at the precise moment the SABBATH ENDED on SATRDAY NIGHT. NOT on the morning [dawn] of the 1st day of the week.

Second, the verse above in 1 Cor 11 does NOT read “The Day of the LORD”, but ‘the day of our Lord.’ That is VERY important.

In an English bible, LORD always refers to יהוה. But most of them do not point this out in the ‘new testament’, because in the greek they xlated from the Aramaic two DIFFERENT WORDS as one word: Maryah and Maran into ‘kurios’. This comes into English as “Lord”, and NOT LORD. In the OT, the word LORD always represents the NAME of G-d, which is יהוה. The word Lord represents the word “Adonai,” which means master/lord. In the NT, “Lord” represents BOTH יהוה and Adonai! [Maryah and Maran in Aramaic]. In an English bible, this distinction cannot be seen, but it is SO IMPORTANT! Aramaic is the ONLY LANGUAGE other than Hebrew that has a word that means יהוה . No other language does, including greek. So, this verse in 1 Cor is NOT speaking about the Day of the LORD, the Day of יהוה .

The Day of יהוה is JUDGMENT DAY. It always has been. It is Yom Kippur. It is the day of the outpouring of the WRATH of G-d, when man needs ATONEMENT from the judgment. It is NOT the weekly celebration of Yeshua’s resurrection on the 1st day of the week, especially given that He rose from the dead on Motzei Shabbat/Havdallah on satrday night!

So, what is this verse above referencing? Well, Yeshua said of Himself: “The Son of Man is also MASTER [Adon/MARAN/lord] of the SHABBAT.” [Matt 12:8, Mar 2:28, Luke 6:5]. Here, Maran is used, and NOT Maryah. This means that the SABBATH DAY is His Day!  The day of our “Adon”/”Maran” is SHABBAT! Shaul is telling the CORINTHIAN [GENTILE] Congregation that they’re not gathering in the right manner, on Shabbat.  THEY WERE gathering on the SABBATH! They were just making a party of it and not honoring their brethren. The gentiles had not yet developed a REVERENCE for the Sabbath!

Further, He alludes to Pesakh here [Passover], the night Yeshua died, saying they were eating the Body of יהוה and drinking the blood of יהוה ~!!! I’ll get to that! Bread and Wine have LONG been the elements of Pesakh! AND, in Jewish thought, the Sabbath is a “Mini-Passover!” IT ALWAYS HAS BEEN. So, the lighting of the candle [to light the room because it was night time] to start the ‘day’, the blessing of the wine and the bread in all our Jewish homes throughout the ages has pointed to the Fellowship of Messiah Yeshua [the xlation has given us the “communion” of Messiah Yeshua].

We celebrate the Pesakh WEEKLY, commemorating His death and resurrection, and our participation in it, in our HOMES, on the weekly Sabbath.  The Day of Adoneinu. NOTHING could be more JEWISH, AND, nothing could honor the Jewish Messiah more appropriately.

Now, the fact that it is the Body of יהוה :

Zechariah tells us that יהוה would die. Jews have struggled with this verse, and in their English xlations of the Tanak, they ‘hide’ this phenomenon from the Jewish reader. But in Zech 12:10 we read:

“And I [ יהוה ] will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Yerushalayim, the spirit of grace and of supplication; and they shall look unto Me [ יהוה ] the one whom they PIERCED, and they shall mourn for HIM, as one mourns for his beloved son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his first-born.”

THIS is why we strive to help people understand the nature of Messiah, that He is BOTH DIVINE and HUMAN, and not part of a pagan ‘trinity’. DO NOT shut your mind off! There is NO trinity in the scriptures. There is ONE G-D who manifests on earth in His Son and by His Ruakh [spirit], but there are not ‘three in one’, but ONE manifesting in many ways, but now and forever in His Son and in His Ru’akh. Twice, while remaining seated on HIS THRONE. G-D manifested in many ways throughout the ages! [Heb 1:1-4]

“In days gone by, G-D spoke in many and varied ways to the fathers through the prophets. But now, in the acharit-hayamim, He has spoken to us through His Son, to whom He has given ownership of everything, and through whom He created the universe.”

Many of those times Abba sent the “Messenger of יהוה “, which was always a TEMPORARY manifestation of the WORD in an angelic Body. This WORD eventually BECAME a HUMAN BODY, and is TODAY a HUMAN BODY, a permanent manifestation of G-D in a Body, but NOT in the SAME body as the Father! [which is the ‘official’ teaching of the catholic church on its pagan trinity]. The WORD clearly states “For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess NOT that Yeshua HaMashiakh is come IN THE FLESH. This is a deceiver and an anti-Messiah.” 2 John 1:7

“And he that denies the SON [in the flesh] also denies the Father”. I John 2:23

The Body, the flesh and bone BODY of Messiah Yeshua is the CORNERSTONE of our faith. If He is NOT still in a HUMAN BODY, we are all wasting our time saying He is our Salvation, because we make G-D a liar, who said the world would pierce יהוה and mourn for Him as a Beloved SON, as a “Bekhorah”, the firstborn; Messiah is the firstborn from among the dead. If He was and is the same ‘substance’ [material makeup] as G-d the FATHER, then this never happened.

So, we worship on the Sabbath day of Adoneinu, the Master of the Sabbath! AND, we partake of the spiritual Body and Blood of יהוה to remember that He DIED and ROSE from the dead.

Discerning the Body of יהוה, then, means not only remembering Yeshua’s death and burial and resurrection, but remembering that HE IS IN US. We are HIS BODY. Our partaking is spiritual and NOT physical. Honoring our brothers is a part of recognizing HIS BODY. “Father, just as I am IN YOU, and YOU are IN me, let THEM [those of us who trust] be ONE IN US, that the world may know that you SENT me.” THAT is the BODY of יהוה. And we commemorate this EVERY SABBATH.

The GREAT Command and the GREAT Commission

These two scriptures are both foundational.  They are D’varim 6:4-5, and Matti 28:19-20.

To the Jew, the first is the “Great Command,” meaning we understand that there is only ONE Elohim, and that His Name is יהוה .

To the Christian, the “Great Commission” is the task at hand to go out and make ‘converts’, depending on one’s theological perspective.  But, generally speaking, it is to make adherents to one’s form of Christian belief.

The observation that is posed today, however, is how very intertwined these two “GREAT” scriptures should be.

Yeshua Himself supported the Jewish customary understanding of what the greatest Mitzvah [Commandment from G-d] is.  He was asked the very direct question [Mark 12], and gave the very direct answer, saying that the greatest of all Mitzvot is, “Shema, Yisra’el,  יהוה  is our Elohim, יהוה  is ONE.”  And continued saying the rest of it, that we should love this יהוה with every facet of our being.

And Yeshua is the one who said, “Go, therefore, and make talmidim of all nations, and immerse them in the Name of HaAv and HaBen and Ru’akh HaKodesh; and teach them to obey everything that I have commanded you; and behold, I am with you every day, to the end of the age.”

Now, we must all trust that this is exactly what those 12 men did; and also we must trust that Sha’ul, a ‘sent one’ who was born ‘out of season,’ did the very same thing: Make disciples and immerse them into a Name.

The issue is that now there are many variations of what ‘making a disciple’ is, and also of how and into what Name to immerse those ‘talmidim’.

The passage Yeshua quoted did not come to be called “The Great Commission” for many, many years after Yeshua gave that mandate.  But, the Shema has been called “The Greatest Mitzvah” for thousands of years.  It would seem that Yeshua, who also asserted that this is the greatest Mitzvah, would support teaching that very idea?  Does the Great Commission actually do that?

“Immersing them into the NAME of HaAv, and HaBen, and Ru’akh HaKodesh.”

Something very important to note here is that He said “NAME”, and not “NAMES”.

Is it at all possible that Yeshua was implying that the three identities He mentioned all shared a single NAME, and thereby the same NATURE? [Name is indeed ‘character’ or ‘nature’ in Hebrew, rooted in the thought of ‘reputation.’]

If you look in the greatest of the Mitzvot, we see the Name,  יהוה  , three times: Twice in the first statement, and once in the mandate to LOVE HIM with all of the being.

Here, Yeshua is stating three TITLES, and NOT ‘names,’ having said to immerse into a single NAME.

It would seem that Kefa, Yokhanan, and all the others, who stood there in awe of their resurrected Messiah, would understand just precisely WHAT HE meant, and HOW to do what He was telling them to do?  I would think so.  So, it would seem to us that doing what those men did would be the best practice, since Yeshua did not stick around to show us how.

Kefa was the very first person ever to take the mantle on himself actually to do what Yeshua said to do in Matti chapter 28.  In Ma’asei HaShlikhim, he preaches the ‘B’sorah’, the Good News, for the first time.  So, it would seem that in order to make a Talmid, one must in some way ‘preach.’  That word has a stigma with it these days, so, lets limit it to what ‘b’sorah’ actually means: DECLARE.

Kefa DECLARED by the Tanakh [OT scriptures] that Yeshua is the Messiah, sent to redeem sinful man; that he was executed by man, that Elohim raised Him from the dead.  And that Israel needed to ‘do teshuvah’, or ‘repent’, which means, to Jewish people, to return to doing the commands; the Shema being the greatest of them.  And then he told them, “Be immersed in the NAME of….”

Are you ready?  Did he say “Father, Son, and Holy Spirit?” “Patri, Fili , et Spiritu Sancti?”  NO!

In the Name [still singular] of יהוה Yeshua!

Wait one.  Is that REALLY what Kefa said?  Do we trust scripture?  Then we must surrender to the fact that this is what Kefa said.  And if it is what he said, we must trust that it is also what he DID, having stood there to hear Yeshua tell them to do this very thing!

Now, some might say, but it only says, ‘Lord’ there.  And yes, in your greek-sourced, English bibles, that is what it says.  But, in the Aramaic, there is a direct equivalent to The Name, יהוה , and that is in fact what we read right here.

For brevity’s sake, I’m going to just state that EVERY OTHER immersion in the Brit Khadashah [NT scriptures] has ONLY the attestation that in the Name of Yeshua, in the Name of יהוה  Yeshua, or in the Name of Yeshua HaMashiakh, is anyone immersed.  NEVER ONCE is anyone immersed into the three titles, ‘Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.’ NOT ONE TIME.

We, as believers, wonder why we cannot unify, and we’ve taken the very Creator and DIVIDED Him into three separate beings, when HE emphatically tells us that HE IS ONE.  And, we’ve taken the mode of immersion, which helps to affect making someone a Talmid [Student] of Rabbi Yeshua, and divided that mode up into three separate titles, not speaking a NAME at all!  So, we have so many “Messianic” people, including Jews who theoretically understand the GREATEST Mitzvah, following the Rabbis of those who reject Messiah in all kinds of doctrine, including NOT SAYING HIS NAME AT ALL, much less immersing HIS Talmidim into it!  Teachers are denying the Students of Rabbi Yeshua the very mechanism that IMMERSES THEM INTO HIM.  And Christian teachers are immersing their adherents into three separate titles as well, and then leaving off creating ‘talmidim’, or disciplined Torah STUDENTS. Many times, they immerse someone, and NEVER SEE THEM AGAIN.  The whole believing community KNOWS that there is a lack of power and evidence of the B’sorah.  They KNOW that they are floundering to MAKE DISCIPLES [even the greek for disciple implies something more than one who ‘just’ believes, rooted in the word ‘discipline’.] Even Yokhanan the Immerser’s Talmidim understood, when hearing their immersion was not sufficient, that they needed to re-immerse into the Name of יהוה  Yeshua! [Ma’asei 19:5] in order to receive the Ru’akh HaKodesh.

The Shema speaks the Name  יהוה  three times, in urging us to understand who our G-d is, that He has a SINGLE NATURE, and that HE is to be loved above all else.  Yeshua tells His Talmidim to immerse into a NAME, and they follow suit and immerse into the Name  יהוה  Yeshua HaMashiakh.  But our Jewish people will not speak the Name at all, and our Christian people will not let go of thinking there are three gods, three separate natures that are a consortium of deities that share a body.

When the followers of Messiah TRULY understand WHO HE IS, THEN will we UNIFY in TRUTH, and THEN we will see TRUE TALMIDIM, who have but ONE RABBI: יהוה Yeshua HaMashiakh, Ben HaElohim.
